Developing personalized therapies–as a PhD candidate

Autumn on campus always brings a sense of nostalgia. The falling Buckeye leaves, football Saturdays and the energy of students remind me of my own time as a student at Ohio State. This year, that feeling was especially poignant as we hosted several class reunions during Homecoming Weekend, including my own: the Class of 1985. While reconnecting with my classmates and meeting alumni from across the decades, it was heartwarming to hear updates on their lives and careers and to learn how the college continues to shape their journeys. These Homecoming traditions not only keep our community connected, but they also help forge new relationships among alumni, faculty and students.

Connection is central to everything we do at the College of Pharmacy, and you’ll find examples throughout this issue of The Script. Dr. Victoria Williams’ joint appointment between the college and Wexner Medical Center has led to research that illustrates how clinical insight drives meaningful discovery. Dr. Myriam Shaw Ojeda’s collaboration with colleagues at Ohio State Extension led to an award-winning vaccine education toolkit that empowers rural Ohioans to make informed health care decisions. Our students also benefit from connections, like BSPS student Hannah Kemper, who partnered with peers across campus to launch a caregiving app for families affected by dementia – earning $50,000 in competitive university funding.

Last month, I was honored to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine, joining nine other Ohio State faculty members from fields as varied as psychology, veterinary biosciences and a small but mighty group of 20 members representing pharmacy, including Drs. Milap Nahata and Julie Johnson ’85. As I shared in the university’s announcement, “The best science happens when we work together.” That spirit of connection—between people, ideas and institutions—transforms education and leads to innovation that transforms patient care. It is what makes our college and profession thrive and continues to guide us forward.

Go Buckeyes!
