Undergraduate researcher Mitchel Sham chosen to deliver Ohio State pre-commencement speech

May 26, 2026

Undergraduate researcher Mitchel Sham was chosen to deliver a speech at The Ohio State University's pre-commencement dinner on May 9 on the 11th floor of Thompson Library.

Hosted by Ohio State President Ravi V. Bellamkonda and associate clinical professor and senior director for leadership, policy engagement and innovation at the College of Nursing, Dr. Lalita Kaligotla, this event welcomed university leaders, the Board of Trustees and guests to celebrate commencement honorees.

Sham, a microbiology major with a minor in pharmaceutical sciences, has been an integral researcher in the lab of Jack Yalowich, PhD, professor of pharmaceutics and pharmacology. For almost two years, he has been working on Novel Bacterial Topoisomerase Inhibitors.

During his speech, Sham expressed his fondness for the university and how, as a freshman, he found his supportive niche. As his speech came to a close, Sham ended with the universal rally cry, "O-H," leaving the room shouting "I-O."
