Three Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) students represented The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy at the 2018 Choose Ohio First Scholar Showcase. Now in its tenth year, the scholar showcase is a celebration of the Choose Ohio First Scholarship initiative, which allocated more than $16 million in aid for students enrolled in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) fields in the last year.
More than 40 students shared posters during the showcase, including Hailey Baird, Riley Mullins, and Brittany Shook from the College of Pharmacy. Their poster topics included:
A Look inside the Generation Rx Lab at COSI – Hailey Baird
Baird’s poster shared the purpose of the COSI lab and her experience as a student volunteer. She showed the impact that the lab makes on the community through before-and-after assessments of visitor knowledge. In addition to her poster, Baird demonstrated some of the quick educational activities that are conducted in the lab.
Androgen Receptor in Hepatocellular Carcinoma – Riley Mullins
Mullins’ poster detailed the research he is conducting in Dr. Chris Coss’ lab at Ohio State on androgen receptor splice variants (AR-SVs) as a therapeutic target in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In his research, Mullins is looking to elucidate the role of AR-SVs in the growth and viability of HCC tumor cells in addition to testing the ability of novel drugs to inhibit AR-SVs.
Phosphate Capture Utilizing Molecular Recognition at the Air/Water Interface – Brittany Shook
Shook’s poster showed the research she has conducted on the recognition of phosphate at the air/water interface to help lessen the ecological impact of phosphate in water. Her project utilizes different techniques including a Langmuir Isotherm to investigate how various receptors will recognize and bind with phosphate in water, benefiting the environment.
Congratulations to Hailey, Riley and Brittany on their accomplishments!
