PharmD students advocate in support of bill authorizing pharmacists to treat select respiratory conditions

April 6, 2026

The Advocacy Collaborative recently organized a letter-writing initiative in support of Ohio Senate Bill 230, currently under consideration in the Ohio Senate. This legislation would authorize pharmacists to screen, test and treat select respiratory conditions, including influenza, strep throat, COVID-19 and RSV, under a statewide protocol.

Following strong student engagement at the Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA) Student Legislative Day, many PharmD students expressed interest in continuing their advocacy efforts. In response, the Advocacy Collaborative brought this initiative directly to the Ann and Barry Klein Family Student Lounge, making it easy for students to participate.

The campaign resulted in 20 handwritten letters of support submitted by PharmD students of all classes. This effort highlights a shared commitment to expanding health care access as pharmacists are one of the most accessible health care providers, and a step towards pharmacists practicing at the top of their license.
