Creating a culture of care for students
Faculty and staff play an important role in supporting student well-being.
If you are concerned about a student, start by noticing and addressing changes in behavior, attendance, academic performance or overall presentation. A simple check-in can help students feel seen and supported.
When talking with a student, listen with empathy, ask about their support needs and connect them with appropriate resources. Review guidance for supporting students on the Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) Faculty & Staff and Academic Advisors webpages. If there are immediate safety concerns, call 911. Otherwise, consider offering flexibility when appropriate, helping the student connect with CCS, and following up to check on their well-being.
CCS is always available to guide you on how to support a student. While CCS cannot disclose information about a student's care, staff can guide you in responding to concerns and connecting students with resources. CCS can be reached at 614-292-5766 during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.).
Ohio State employees can access confidential support through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
