Building safety reminders - autumn semester
Building Emergencies:
- If you witness a building emergency (water leak, flooding, etc.) and there is no immediate threat to anyone’s personal safety, please call Service-to-Facilities at 614-292-4357 (2-HELP) immediately.
- After calling Service-to-Facilities, please notify our Facilities Manager, Tami Boldman (Boldman.11@osu.edu).
Active Aggressor Training:
- It is important to know how to deal with potential threatening situations from an active aggressor. While sad that we are at this place in our country, we want to empower everyone to protect themselves and their colleagues. We are requesting that all college employees review the linked video at their earliest convenience.

Theft Prevention:
The most frequent campus crime is theft. It’s very important for faculty and staff to lock their office doors, even if you are just “going down the hall for a second”. We occasionally see thefts from offices and labs where doors were left open, or even shut but not locked. Please make sure to help the college protect our assets and your personal property. For those with ground level windows, please make sure they are closed and locked when you are not in your office or lab. Please make sure to contact the college Dean’s Office immediately upon any theft. Also, please remember if you see something suspicious, say something! University Police non-emergency contact is 614-292-2121 and please also contact the Dean’s Office.
Personal Safety Tips:
- Do not leave tempting valuables visible inside your parked car.
- Record serial numbers and descriptions of valuable property.
- Do not put your address or attach your BuckID to your key ring.
- Always lock your car.
- Use well-lighted pathways at night.
- Request a Lyft Ride if you need safe transportation across campus at night. For more information - https://ttm.osu.edu/ride-smart
- Sign up for Buckeye Alerts if you are not receiving them
- Our Surviving an Active Aggressor video promotes the Run. Hide. Fight. strategy.
- While we all continue to rely more heavily on technology, be wary of scams. Our international students often are targeted by scammers, the most common of which involve immigration, tuition, taxes, employment, travel and housing. Protect your personal information like social security numbers and banking details.
- Rave Guardian Safety App: Ohio State’s Department of Public Safety offers a safety app called Rave Guardian for students, faculty, and staff. The app allows users to select friends or family to follow them via GPS tracking as they travel on and around campus. The virtual guardian is shown a timer based on your destination. Download today by searching “Rave Guardian” inside the Ohio State app. More: dps.osu.edu/rave-guardian
Office, Workstation & Passwords:
- Always lock office doors even if you are only stepping out for a minute.
- If you do not have a private office, be sure to lock personal items in a drawer that only you have the key to.
- Remember that select College and University personnel have master keys that let them into most spaces. In some cases, this can include janitors, maintenance personnel and even some contractors. The security of your workspace is your responsibility.
- Always lock your workstation (computer) when leaving your desk, even if stepping away for a short period of time. You can lock your workstation by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete on your keyboard and selecting “Lock this Computer”.
- Protect your password(s) and never share them with another individual.
