Ohio State College of Pharmacy posts highest PGY1 match rate in years
The Ohio State University pharmacy students and graduates recorded their strongest PGY1 residency match performance in recent years, according to 2026 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Match results released this spring.
Overall, 96.3% of Ohio State students and graduates who participated in the PGY1 match secured a residency position, marking the highest PGY1 match rate the program has recorded since at least 2018. The result exceeds the national PGY1 match rate of 84.4%.
Among Class of 2026 graduates specifically, 96.1% matched into PGY1 residencies, compared with a national rate of 86.6% for the same graduating class. Ohio State’s PGY1 match rate ranked fourth among both the U.S. News & World Report Top 10 pharmacy schools and Big Ten peers.
The majority of Ohio State PGY1 matches in 2026 were in traditional PGY1 pharmacy practice programs, accounting for nearly 79% of applicants. Additional placements included community pharmacy, managed care and combined PGY1 and PGY2 programs in areas such as health-system administration and leadership, pharmacotherapy, pharmacy informatics, and investigational drugs and research.
Graduates matched with residency programs across a broad geographic footprint, spanning more than a dozen states. While many students remained in Ohio, matching with major health systems including the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic, others secured positions at nationally recognized institutions such as Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Baylor University Medical Center, reflecting both strong local partnerships and national competitiveness.
"We are proud of the Class of 2026 and look forward to seeing the impact they will have on patients and the profession of the pharmacy,” said David Matthews, PharmD, BCACP, assistant dean of PharmD studies and associate professor of practice at the College of Pharmacy. “These match results highlight the breadth of opportunities our graduates are pursuing and their readiness to excel in diverse clinical settings.”
