While cruising along the Mississippi River on a riverboat in the heart of New Orleans, 120 alumni, students, faculty and staff of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy MS in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (MS/HSPAL) program celebrated its 65th anniversary.

The milestone celebration was held on Dec. 8 in conjunction with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition, which draws faculty, staff, students, residents and alumni from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and other programs every December.

Past and current members of the MS/HSPAL degree program also belong to the Latiolais Leadership Program (LLP), which was established by Clifton J. Latiolais to inspire a culture of support and comradery among students, residents and alumni of the program. All MS/HSPAL students are invited to participate in LLP, which grants them lifetime access to events for networking and mentorship. The program currently includes over 400 alumni.

Alumni and friends at the celebration

Ohio State has been a leader in health-system pharmacy administration and leadership largely because of Latiolais, who brought international distinction to The Ohio State University Hospitals and the College of Pharmacy since his career at Ohio State began in 1958. For the next quarter century, Latiolais would publish widely adopted textbooks and teach and operate under a philosophy he coined, “Enthusiasm for Excellence.”

Recipients of the Clifton J. Latiolais Leadership Award

The Clifton J. Latiolais Leadership Award was presented to Edward Stemley, PharmD, MS ’98, for his significant contributions to health-system pharmacy. Dr. Stemley is the Administrative Director of Pharmacy at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

The 65th anniversary celebration was facilitated by LLP Director and Chief Pharmacy Officer at OSUWMC Trisha Jordan, PharmD, MS ’01; Professor Philip Schneider, MS ’75, FASHP, FASPEN, FFIP; Anna Lattos, PharmD, MS ‘23; John Hertig, PharmD, MS ’10; Jacob Thompson, PharmD, MS ’10; OSUCCC – James Senior Director of Pharmacy Julie Kennerly-Shah, PharmD, MS ’14; and the new MS/HSPAL Director and Associate Professor Lisa Mostafavifar, PharmD, BCPS, BCNSP, MS ’22.

"This program has afforded me many new opportunities in my pharmacy career,” Dr. Mostafavifar said. “As a graduate of the MS/HSPAL program and an alumni member of LLP, I was honored to help facilitate the 65th celebration of Latiolais Leadership.”
