In their own words - Buckeyes across the state tackle COVID-19

College of Pharmacy faculty, staff and student pharmacists practicing across the state vaccinated more than 250,000 Ohioans against COVID-19. Here are some of their experiences, in their own words.

It’s one thing to vaccinate a stranger, it’s another to vaccinate your own boss at their own request.

My first COVID vaccine clinic I helped out in December 2020 when COVID vaccines first came out. I volunteered alongside Mount Carmel’s chief nursing officer, regional pharmacy officer, and other pharmacists and nurses on Christmas Eve to help immunize our fellow health care professionals at the hospital to help better protect themselves when taking care of patients. I feel honored to have helped with the immunization efforts for not only health care professionals but also the general population in the community once the vaccine became widely available!

Today I was once again reminded how blessed I am. I had the opportunity to help the OSU Wexner Medical Center Pharmacy team prepare doses of COVID-19 vaccine AND see some friends and students in our PharmD program in person at the Schottenstein Center. Here’s a picture with my dear friend and long-time colleague Julie Legg, PharmD who I hadn’t seen in person for way too long. I feel like I earned a certificate in metallurgy today as I was handling the “liquid gold” that is the COVID 19 vaccine. Awesome to witness the operations and see so many patients getting vaccinated!

I am honored that I not only train pharmacists and student pharmacists at the College, but I also get to administer vaccinations as part of the Shots at the Schott team in 2021.

As a CVS Health intern, I spent most of my winter break last December & January (2020-2021) immunizing patients in long term care and nursing facilities throughout the greater Cincinnati and Dayton area as soon as the first COVID-19 vaccine was authorized. I felt compelled to take part in this lifesaving, historic vaccination effort that ended up being life changing for me. As a student pharmacist, this experience more than any other reaffirmed to me the positive impact that pharmacists can and will make in our communities.

I wanted to become a pharmacist to impact the lives of others. During this experience, I touched the lives of so many and I am not even a pharmacist yet! With every patient that sincerely thanked me after being vaccinated, I was reminded of precisely why I began this journey.

While interning, I had the unique opportunity to help protect my front line staff when the vaccines were initially approved for emergency use. This was a humbling experience that showed pharmacy’s crucial role in the fight against COVID-19. I will always remember the first patient I vaccinated, an emergency medicine resident, who expressed sincere appreciation for the work we were doing. It was an incredible feeling to know the impact I was making within the healthcare team.
