Students, faculty and residents represent college at ASHP Midyear
College of Pharmacy students, faculty, and Ohio State Wexner Medical Center pharmacy residents attended the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) Clinical Midyear Meeting last week. ASHP Midyear was hosted from Dec. 2-7 in Anaheim, CA, and brought in over 25,000 attendees. The event is the largest annual gathering of pharmacists in the US and full of opportunities to network, present research and learn about the latest advancements in the field of pharmacy.
Research Presentations and Awards
Over 25 of our P3 students were in attendance, and there was an amazing Ohio State presence in the student poster presentations. These presentations allow PharmD candidates an opportunity to share their research with their peers and engage in discussions for valuable feedback.
Of the students presenting, several came from Ohio State’s Muslim Pharmacy Student Association (MuPhSA). This is MuPhSA’s first year as an official Ohio State student organization, and the group had a great turnout for the conference. MuPhSA members Hanin Ali, Amaal Ahmed, Tara Rikabi and Salma El-Barrad were all among Ohio State’s student presenters.
Residents of the Wexner Medical Center presented their research in the residents and fellows showcase. Here, pharmacy professionals also had the opportunity to share their research and connect with their peers over their findings.
The medical center’s drug repository program was one of six national recipients of the ASHP Best Practices Award at the Midyear Meeting. The program and poster were created by Athena C. Triglia, PharmD; Jennifer Booth, PharmD, MS, BCPS; Andre Fernandes, PharmD, MS, BCPS, BCSCP; Kevin Wolowiec, PharmD; Trisha Jordan, PharmD, MS; and Julie Kennerly-Shah, PharmD, MS, MHA, BCPS.
Drs. Triglia, Booth, Jordan and Kennerly-Shah were all in attendance to present the group’s poster for the program and to accept the Best Practices Award. The drug repository program has found outstanding success in alleviating the financial burdens of cancer treatment for eligibles patients at the medical center. The group is continuing to advocate for legislative changes to further support patients in the community.
Celebrating our community at Midyear
Aside from research showcases, members of the College of Pharmacy networked and celebrated with both new and familiar faces.
The college hosted an Ohio State reception, an Alumni luncheon, a residency showcase, and the Annual Latiolais Leadership Luncheon.
At the Latiolais Luncheon, attendees heard from Dean Deanna Kroetz, PhD, BS Pharmacy ’85; Trisha Jordan, PharmD, MS-HSPA, assistant dean for Medical Center affairs; and this year’s winner of the Clifton J. Latiolais Leadership Award, Michael Ganio, PharmD, MS ’15, FASHP, senior director of pharmacy practice and quality at ASHP. Established in 1985, The Clifton J. Latiolais Award is presented annually to a graduate of the MS of Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership program (MS/HSPA-L), who has made significant contributions to health-system pharmacy.
Congratulations to the pharmacy Buckeyes who presented, received awards and had the opportunity to network at Midyear!
