Professional Interests

New natural product sources, such as new and unidentified fungal and bacterial microorganisms, microbial endophytes, and endemic and medicinal plant species, contain many undiscovered potential bioactive secondary metabolites that can be used to combat the world’s deadly diseases including cancer, malaria, and viral infections. Dr. Rakotondraibe’s laboratory focuses on the investigation of these new natural product sources to discover novel pharmacophores of potential drug candidates. We routinely perform bioassay-guided isolation, structural elucidation and development of bioactive compounds from natural sources (higher plants, liverworts, lichens, soil- and marine-derived microbes as well as microbial endophytes). Our recent ongoing projects include the isolation of mycobionts of U.S. lichens and the investigation of their bioactive secondary metabolites.

Biography

Dr. Harinantenaina Liva Rakotondraibe joined The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy as an Assistant Professor in 2013 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2019. Since September 2023 he has been Director of the College of Pharmacy Undergraduate Research program. Dr. Rakotondraibe received his Diplome d’Etude Approfondue (DEA, equivalent to a Master of Science degree) in Organic Chemistry/Option Natural Products from the University of Antananarivo (Madagascar). He moved to Hiroshima University (Japan) Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine and received his Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2003. After his doctoral training, Dr. Rakotondraibe worked on the isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive compounds from liverworts and higher plants at Tokushima Bunri University (Japan) and in 2007 was appointed as Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacognosy, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University. In 2009, he moved to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Department of Chemistry as a Senior Scientist to work on cytotoxic and antimalarial compounds from selected plant natural products of Madagascar.

Dr. Rakotondraibe was the recipient of a Mumbusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MEXT Japan) Scholarship Award in 1999, as well as Japanese Society for the Promotion of Sciences Postdoctoral (JSPS) Fellowship Award (2005-2007) and was a JSPS Bridge Scholar grant awardee in 2018. Dr. Rakotondraibe was the recipient of the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy Dean’s Innovation award in 2023 and the Ohio State University Undergraduate Research Innovation Award in 2024 and 2025.

Dr. Rakotondraibe has authored or co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed research articles, review articles, and book chapters. Since he has joined the Ohio State University, he has received over $1.5 million as Principal Investigator/Multiple Principal Investigator/Co-investigator of projects supported by both the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and private industry in addition to being awarded OSU internal funding. Dr. Rakotondraibe has mentored 12 graduate students and has also directly supervised several postdoctoral and visiting fellows and over 20 undergraduates. He is an editorial board member of the Journal Natural Medicines and a section editor (Natural Products) of the journal Molecules.
