Professional Interests

Dr. Matthews is passionate about developing innovative and effective teaching methods and measuring the impact of educational interventions through scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). His specific areas of interest within SoTL include interventions that promote metacognition and retention.

Biography

David E. Matthews, PharmD, BCACP, is an Associate Professor – Practice in the Division of Pharmacy Education and Innovation at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy (OSU COP). He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from OSU in 2013 and completed a PGY1 residency in the ambulatory care setting with OSU COP and Ohio State General Internal Medicine (OSU GIM) in 2014. In 2017, he became a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist.

Since 2016, Dr. Matthews has coordinated and taught within the Integrated Patient Care Laboratory (IPCaL) sequence at OSU COP. He assisted in the conceptualization and creation of four laboratory courses during the implementation of the I3 (Inquire, Innovate, and Involve) curriculum at OSU COP. He coordinates numerous simulation-bases learning activities in IPCaL to prepare students for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotations, including standardized patient encounters, simulated interprofessional interactions, and product verification simulations. He has received several awards for his teaching, including the American Association of College of Pharmacy (AACP) Innovation in Teaching Award (2020) and the Miriam R. Balshone Award for Distinguished Teaching in PharmD (2022) at Ohio State. He has published multiple peer-reviewed articles on teaching innovations in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (AJPE).

In addition to his teaching, Dr. Matthews also practices in a primary care setting within OSU GIM where he provides chronic disease state management through collaborative practice, transitional care management, and population health interventions. His practice-based research focuses on implementation of population health initiatives to improve patient outcomes.
