Biography
Casey Combs May, PharmD, BCCCP, FNCS is an Associate Professor – Clinical in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Sciences at the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and completed her PGY1 pharmacy residency training and PGY2 critical care pharmacy residency training at The University of Kentucky Healthcare. Dr. May also serves as the Director of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program.
Dr. May practices as a neurocritical care specialty practice pharmacist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where she provides innovative patient-centered care to critically ill patients with a neurological injury. In this setting, she works with an interdisciplinary team to help manage the pharmacotherapy for a variety of neurologic injuries including but not limited to ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, status epilepticus, myasthenia gravis, meningitis and brain tumors. In addition to direct patient care, Dr. May uses her expertise to help craft institutional evidence-based guidelines and protocols to standardize care.
Within the academic setting, Dr. May takes on the role of co-coordinator for the fourth and final course sequence in the integrated pharmacotherapy course (IP4). In this capacity, she skillfully designs and guides small group activities within the team-based learning framework, delivering comprehensive content on general critical care topics. Beyond this, Dr. May assumes the responsibility of leading a Critical Care Elective (PHR 7250 Introduction to Critical Care Pharmacy Practice). In this elective, she endeavors to immerse students in the critical care specialty through engaging methods such as literature evaluation, patient simulations, and in-depth patient case discussions.
Dr. May holds the position of Chair for the Communications Committee within the Ohio Chapter of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). In addition, she plays a vital role as a member of both the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS) Pharmacy Section Leadership Committee and the NCS Pharmacy Research and Scholarship Committee. Her dedication extends beyond conventional roles, as she passionately advocates for the integration of pharmacists at the bedside, within established guidelines, and in various other influential spheres.
Her research interest lies in anticoagulation reversal and improving the time to bundled care delivery in the setting of hemorrhagic stroke, optimization of antiplatelet pharmacotherapy after neuroendovascular procedures, and optimizing nutritional status and evaluating pharmacokinetic variations in the neurocritically ill patient. She also has an interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning, specifically around preparing clinicians to teach in the didactic and experiential setting.
