PharmD student Kai Ming Hu received a $2,000 Walmart Future Leaders Scholarship, and Jose Orozco, College of Pharmacy director of student services, was named Advisor of the Year at the 2014 Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) National Conference in Arlington, VA.

The Walmart Future Leaders Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide resources to further career development for pharmacy students. Applicants for the scholarship must have a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, must be an active member of SNPhA, write a one-page essay on the “The Importance of a Community Pharmacist,” and submit two letters of recommendation. Kai Ming Hu was one of five students to receive the scholarship this year.

“This award has provided me with further motivation to push myself professionally to become the best pharmacist that I can be in order to provide the best and most innovative care for patients,” said Kai Ming Hu. “I want to pursue a career as a community pharmacist because I enjoy communicating and building strong relationships with a diverse patient population. Moreover, I enjoy leading and working in a team setting in order to provide the best health care for all patients.”

Originally from Los Angeles, CA, Kai Ming Hu moved 3,000 miles from home to attend pharmacy school at Ohio State. The move was challenging at first because she knew no one prior to starting, but her involvement with SNPhA helped her find comfort away from home.

“It was after the student organization presentations during orientation that I knew I had found my family in Ohio. SNPhA has offered me so many leadership and community service opportunities,” said Kai Ming Hu. “I learned a great deal about teamwork this past year as president and through organizing the 2014 Regions III, IV and V meeting, as well as collaborating with other student leaders from organizations such as Phi Lamda Sigma, Pre-Pharmacy Club, APhA-ASP and ASCP.”

Orozco serves as director of student services for the college. His work with students has extended into a variety of initiatives the college offers its students, and his work with SNPhA’s Ohio State chapter helped the chapter grow and expand opportunities for its members. The award recognizes Jose for his commitment to helping the college’s students achieve their goals and realize their dreams.

“There is no one more deserving of this award than Joe.  He dedicates a tremendous amount of effort to help push our organization to the level it is now,” said Kai Ming Hu. “He's involved in helping us brainstorm ideas on how to increase our membership and plan successful patient care events for the under-served community in Columbus. He is without a doubt more than just an advisor, he is a mentor for all OSU SNPhA members and college of pharmacy students and we couldn't have asked for a better one.”
