Dr. Nahata awarded AACP Pharmacy Practice Section Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Nahata accepting awardDr. Milap C. Nahata, emeritus professor at the College of Pharmacy, recently received the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Pharmacy Practice Section’s first Distinguished Service Award.

The AACP Pharmacy Practice Section Distinguished Service Award is presented to a nominee with 20+ years of experience in academia who holds a faculty position within an AACP member college or school of pharmacy, and who continues to make positive contributions within the pharmacy profession through pharmacy practice, research, leadership and service.

Dr. Nahata has had an incredibly accomplished career to date. He was the first pharmacist to develop clinical practice in pediatric pharmacy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Columbus, Ohio in 1979. He continued his career by serving as division chair of Pharmacy Practice and Science for Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy and associate director of the Medical Center Department of Pharmacy from 1998-2013. An active member of AACP, Dr. Nahata has held a variety of positions in the organization, including president in 2001-2002. Dr. Nahata has been the director of the Institute of Therapeutic Innovations and Outcomes (ITIO), since its inception in 2011.

Through ITIO, Dr. Nahata has contributed to improving the use of medications among enrollees in Rx Ohio Collaborative including Ohio State employees through the Ohio State Health Plan. In addition, a telephonic medication therapy management (MTM) program was implemented within ITIO in 2014, which is fully funded by external contracts. This program has since expanded and is employing 40 pharmacists and technicians, and 130 part-time pharmacy and undergraduate student employees who cover more than 2 million lives and provide MTM services to more than 3,000 patients per week across the country.

In addition to his work with ITIO, Dr. Nahata is actively engaged in teaching and research. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching from the College and the University, and for outstanding contributions to practice and research in pediatric pharmacy from the national organizations. Dr. Nahata is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and an Elected Fellow of ACCP, APhA, ASHP, American Academy of Microbiology, PPAG, American College of Clinical Pharmacology, and American Association for the Advancement of Science for contributions to patient care, education and clinical research. He has presented more than 300 invited lectures in various countries in Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and North America, and has more than 350 contributed papers presented at national and international meetings describing practice based research.

In honor of Dr. Nahata, former students and fellows created the annual Milap Nahata Distinguished Lectureship in 2012.
