06/02/2017

Dr. Yizhou Dong, Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy, was recently selected as a Columbus Business First 2017 Forty Under 40 honoree. Forty Under 40 recognizes young professionals who are making great strides in shaping our community’s future. This year, more than 280 nominations were received for consideration.

Dr. Dong has been a faculty member at Ohio State since 2014. He is also a member of the globally recognized Translational Therapeutics team at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Along with his research group, Dr. Dong is devoted to drug discovery and delivery for the treatment of cancer, as well as inherited genetic disorders and infectious diseases. The team integrates their specialty in pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, biomedical engineering, materials formulation, and animal studies to design novel therapeutic medicines and uncover their mechanisms of actions. Their ultimate goal is to translate scientific results and technological inventions into more effective treatments, resulting in more fulfilled lives of all individuals.

Henry J. Mann, PharmD, FCCP, FCCM, FASHP, dean and professor at Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy, nominated Dr. Dong for his numerous research accomplishments and his vision to address important scientific questions.

In his nomination, Mann said, “Dr. Dong has my strongest nomination. I am confident that he will become a leading investigator in the field of pharmaceutical and biomedical research. Not only is he a self-motivated young person, but he is also pleasant and optimistic, and is well liked by all students, faculty, staff, and other scientists in the college. It is extremely hard to find such a congenial person and exceptional scientist today.”

Prior to coming to Ohio State, Dr. Dong was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Robert Langer’s Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Langer is the David H. Koch Institute Professor and a renowned scientist who is one of the most-cited engineers in history. Dr. Dong obtained his PhD degree under the guidance of Dr. Kuo-Hsiung Lee at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Lee is a Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry.

Dr. Dong has published more than 30 articles in prestigious, high-impact journals, and his research has resulted in over 20 patents and inventions. One of his inventions has been licensed, and a clinical trial is planned to be initiated in the near future.

“We are very proud of Yizhou and his many accomplishments, including the Forty Under 40 recognition. He brings so much to the Ohio State community and is making significant impact to the field of pharmaceutical research. We look forward to his continued contributions to the scientific community,” Mann said.
