Assessment Scholar Dr. Douglas Eder to Present on Designing Multiple Choice Tests at College of Pharmacy
The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy is pleased to present a seminar by Dr. Douglas Eder, internationally known scholar in higher education assessment and emeritus faculty at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), on Feb. 12 from 4-5 p.m. in 250 Parks Hall. His presentation, “Thinking Critically About Designing Multiple Choice Tests,” will explore the construction of multiple choice exams, the properties of effective and ineffective questions, designing questions to evaluate critical thinking skills, and ways that student behaviors foil analysis.
Eder has presented and published work regarding the assessment and improvement of student learning, as well as on the neuropharmacology of pregnancy-induced hypertension and human anatomy. A member of the assessment community since its early days, he has worked with 140 institutions of higher learning, collaborating and advising on issues of assessment, program review and reaccreditation.
A two-time recipient of the University Teaching Excellence award from SIUE, Eder has taught courses in anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, bioethics and biology. He was named the Emerson Visiting Distinguished Scholar at Hamilton College and has served in administrative roles at Arizona State University, University of North Florida and Purdue University.
He is currently serving as the “Assessment Coach” at Indiana University Kokomo and is a resource person for The IDEA Center of Manhattan, KS, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve learning in higher education. Additionally, Eder has been an external evaluator for three US Title II educational development grants and two National Science Foundation research grants.
Eder received his doctorate in physiology/biophysics from Florida State University. His work has led to an appointment as associate editor-reviewer for the Journal of Excellence in College Teaching, and he is a regular presenter at the Assessment Institute held annually at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
