Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE)

IPPE refers to the first three years of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Doctor of Pharmacy program. At The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, the first year (P1) and the second year (P2) are referred to as “Introductory” and the third year (P3) as “Intermediate” Pharmacy Practice Experience.

IPPE P1

First year professional students have little to no experience in pharmacy. They are required to complete 50 hours of community pharmacy experience the initial academic year, occurring at two different pharmacies (25 hours per site). Students come to their rotation armed with worksheets used to guide the learning during the rotation.

IPPE P2

Second year professional students are primarily focused on institutional pharmacy practice. Students complete 30 hours of experiences, most of which are gained at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Students are matched with a preceptor for the academic year who helps the student arrange required and elective experiences that are available.

IPPE P3

Third year professional students are required to participate in a variety of activities including community, institutional, and ambulatory care hours. Students complete 40 hours of community pharmacy activities, 40 hours of institutional pharmacy activities, and 16 hours ambulatory care during their final IPPE year.  They are assigned to one community pharmacy and complete the hours on a longitudinal basis.

Some activities include:

  • Engaging in intermediate activities with pharmacy practitioners/mentors in community, institutional, ambulatory care and other practice settings.
  • Enhancing communication skills.

Applying practice skills: Immunizations,  blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose screening/monitoring, medication therapy management (MTM) and monitoring, safe medication usageliterature review/drug information.

In addition to activities mentioned above, students participate in professional development and community health service activities each academic year.
